The Basketball Ireland Superleague season is set to kick off with a bang as games across Ireland commence this weekend on September 30th. Maigh Cuilinn play their first home game Sunday 8 October at 3pm in the University of Galway Sports Arena.

Last season, Maigh Cuilinn experienced a rollercoaster journey, finishing strongly but finding themselves in a nerve-wracking relegation playoff, which they won against UCD Marian in the National Basketball Arena to maintain their status for what is an impressive 13th season at the top tier of Irish basketball.

New Faces, Fresh Ambitions

This season, Maigh Cuilinn welcome some exciting new talents to their roster. Spanish players Aitor Perez and Antonio Calvente, along with Croatian guard Ivan Basic, bring some international experience to the team. Joining them is New Zealand native Josiah Laracy who is working locally and, adds a touch of Kiwi flair to the squad.

Antonio Calvente should add real leadership at the point guard position

Local Heroes Return

While the new additions are sure to make an impact, Maigh Cuilinn remains grounded in its local talent. Fan favorites Joe Tummon, James Connaire, and the fiery Cunningham brothers, Dylan and Kyle, return to don the famous parish green jersey for another year.

Leadership and Experience

Grant Olsson, the professional American player, will once again take the captain’s armband and his leadership and experience will be vital in guiding the team through the highs and lows of the Superleague season.

Coaching Continuity

The returning coaching duo of John Cunningham and Borja Velasco will continue to lead from the sidelines. Their tactical expertise and ability to motivate players have been pivotal in Maigh Cuilinn’s journey thus far, and they remain instrumental in the club’s success.

We are really excited for the season to come. The off-season is a long break from playing in front of the supporters and getting those afternoons all back together as one club and community in the Kingfisher taking on the best players around Ireland.

Mark Your Calendars

Maigh Cuilinn’s first game of the season is set as an away clash when they travel to Tralee on September 30th. However, fans won’t have to wait long to witness the team in action at home, as the home opener takes place on Sunday, October 8th, at 3 pm in the University of Galway Sports Arena. Based on recent encounters between these sides, this game against Killorglin promises to be an exciting affair, and a large crowd is expected to rally behind Maigh Cuilinn as they aim for a winning start to their “lucky number 13” Superleague season.
