Our Journey to National League

While Maigh Cuilinn has fielded a men’s team in competitions dating back to 1966, the club saw a rapid rise in prominence at senior men’s level from 1998 onward. In the year that Sam Maguire crossed the River Shannon for the first time in 32 years, another historic milestone was reached – Maigh Cuilinn won their first ever Galway League Division 1 title. The men of ’98 added the Galway Cup and never looked back, entering the National League for the 1998/1999 season.

Moycullen would play National League for the next decade, constantly challenging at the top of the table against clubs from far bigger playing populations.

With a bedrock of experienced players from the decade of National League success and as a flock of youth internationals came of age to swell the senior ranks, Maigh Cuilinn entered the Superleague for the 2009/2010 season, competing against the very best of Irish basketball on a weekly basis in Ireland’s premier league.

2014/2015 season saw us return back to National League when we captured the league title and returned directly to Superleague the following year. After a surge in the financial power of clubs in recent years, Superleague had been increasingly difficult to compete in and this year (2024/2025) sees Maigh Cuilinn return to National League for what should be a really competitive season.

The long running Maigh Cuilinn representation at National League level is a tremendous reflection on the hard work of the coaches and players involved and of the amazing support given to our flagship team by the club and wider Maigh Cuilinn and Galway sporting community.

Great home support at games a huge reason for Moycullen’s continued participation at National League Level
